It was great to see a healthy field of 16 Superkarts hit the track for a damp qualifying session. The field was boosted by a few interstate visitors, namely Russell and Lindsay Jamieson from QLD and John Cashen from VIC. It would have been ideal if Sydney turned on the weather for the visitors, but it was not to be. Unfortunately, the weather was not favorable. The track was always
greasy and slippery, and the evening session was run under heavy rain. The format was a single day event with an exciting night session to be run under lights.

Lee Vella showed his speed claiming pole from Laurie Fooks. Mark Vickers and Warren McGrouther were next fastest. Blacke Roese showed great speed to claim 5 th fastest just ahead of Tony Moit. Jock Dos Santos and Nathan Ashworth followed next. Wayne Horswell sporting an updated livery and Greg Tinsley rounded out the top ten.

Vella made the best start from Dos Santos and Moit. As the field arrived at turn 2, McGrouther went deep under brakes and understeered into Robert Trimmer’s kart. Even though the impact was side to side, it had enough momentum to spear both Karts into the outfield and eventual retirement. As all of this was happening, Lindsay Jamieson spun and also retired. In fairness to all the drivers, the conditions were very greasy, most drivers struggled to get the power to the ground with out wheel spin. Vella was in a league of his own in front and continually pulled away from the
rest of the pack. Great battle packs were forming in the midfield. Horswell, Ashworth and Dodge raced in close quarters. Russell Jamieson and Vickers had a spirited battle. Peter Ashworth retired on lap 3 and John Cashen followed suit. The normally fast Laurie Fooks was struggling, you could hear the Kart misfiring coming out of slow corners. At the end, Vella won comfortably from Dos Santos and Moit. Russel Jamieson held on for a strong 4 th position just ahead of Roese. Special mention to Brian Tinsley notching up is 50 race start in the NSW State Championship.

Race 2 was run under similar conditions; Vella made another great start and was chased by Fooks. The latter seemed to have his Kart working properly and was able to apply pressure on the leader throughout the race. Trimmer also showed some great speed and was running towards the front early on. All came to an end when his Kart stopped coming out of the hairpin, causing a
sector yellow flag.Nathan Ashworth and Cashen arguably had the best dice of the race, one that would only be separated by 0.400 of a second at the end. Moit and Roese also were never too far apart. Up front Vella continued his good form and won from Fooks. The entertaining Dos Santos finished a lonely 3 rd from Russell Jamieson and Vickers.

Race 3 was the first one under lights, at it was run on a completely wet track. Disaster struck early with Peter Ashworth and Lindsy Jamieson retiring. Vella made his usual start alongside Fooks. Russell Jamieson and Dos Santos continued their dice from previous races. Further back, Brian and Greg Tinsley battled.

Most karters were struggling to get the power down, as one driver
quoted “Working out how much grip we had, was a lucky dip”. As the race evolved Fooks was edging closer to Vella, he seemed to handle the wet conditions better. Towards the end of the race, he closed up to Vella and they had a small collision coming out of turn 2. Coming onto the straight for the final time, Fooks started slowing up. He went from a possible win to coasting across the finish line in 10 th place. Vella won with his Kart showering sparks across the track, it was bottoming out due to a deflating front right tyre. Russell Jamieson finished in 2 nd and Dos Santos was 3rd . Trimmer’s fortune changed with a welcome 4 th place as Roese was 5th .

The final race was run under a heavy downpour. As the field got away, the water being sprayed up was creating visibility problems for the drivers at the rear. Again, there were some early retirements, Dodge and Russell Jamieson did not finish the first lap. Vella continued his great form to lead the race from
Fooks, Dos Santos and Roese. Horswell and Nathan Ashworth fought closely, as did Brian and Greg Tinsley. Visibility was poor with most visors fogging up in the very cold and wet
conditions. Traction was limited, none more evident than by Linsday Jamieson multiple spins throughout the race. In the end Vella made it 4 wins from as many starts, Fooks was 2 nd and Dos Santos 3 rd . Blake Roese finished 4 th ahead of Vickers. Moit was 6 th and McGrouther 7 th . Nathan Ashworth, Horswell and Trimmer rounded out the top 10.
